Cremation Plant


In this page a scheme of a cremation plant as well as an animation of the entire process is provided. It shows the main units of the plant built in Germany including the flue gas cleaning unit to keep the air pollution below the limits of the German regulation 27. BImSchV.

Flat-Bed Cremator


The special construction of the H · R · Heinicke - the flat-bed cremator - consists of a furnace slide door, a cremation chamber (primary combustion chamber), an afterburning chamber (secondary combustion chamber), a cease-burning chamber and as well an ash cooling zone. The mentioned areas of the oven are completely produced by using materials of high quality, mass-produced fire-bricks and insulating materials including the necessary specially shaped bricks. The material qualities are selected according to the different thermal, chemical as well as mechanical requirements.

The material selection is based upon the H · R · Heinicke know-how resulting from more than one hundred designed and implemented facilities which are operating successfully.

The main burning chamber and the afterburning chamber located upon each other represent a compact construction with an optimum heat exchange between the combustion chambers. The result is a very short preheating time and extremely low primary energy consumption with the advantage that no preheating of the combustion air is necessary. The supply of the combustion air is effected by means of a combustion air blower with the result of lower investments and saving of maintenance costs as well as electrical energy consumption above all.

Alternately three burners operating with oil or gas ensure the supply of additional energy in the main burning chamber, afterburning chamber and cease-burning chamber if necessary.

According to our experiences the operation of the burner will be only necessary in the beginning of the cremation for preheating the whole furnace system. During the cremation the temperature is normally released by the combustion of the coffin and the body which are sufficient for an independent combustion. Only in the end of the cremation process it may be necessary that especially the afterburner readjusts the temperature to a value of 850 °C in the afterburning zone. This value is required by the authorities.


The cremation process will be controlled by Direct Digital Control (DDC) to guarantee secure operations. Measurements of temperature and oxygen in co-operation with the combustion air and the burning system ensures that optimum combustion conditions will be achieved at any time.

In a flat bed furnace the body remains on the floor of the primary combustion chamber during the whole cremation process. Thus the carrying of ash particles within the flue gas will be minimized compared to the free-falling type furnace.

After the combustion is nearly completed only the residues of the incineration will be fed into the cease-burning chamber and thereafter into the cooling zone.

H · R · Heinicke´s latest development, the coffin insertion and ashes-removal system ensures
  • the movement of coffins adapted to all usual shapes of coffins and their prompt insertion into the primary combustion chamber.
  • the complete sweeping of ashes into the cease-burning chamber in view of careful treatment of the combustion chamber floor and comfortable handling.
  • fast operation to minimize the cooling of the furnace to avoid the inlet of cold air.
The design of the machine corresponds to the expected mechanical and thermal charges (coffin weights up to 300 kg). Safety directed control of the machine is achieved by directed link with the furnace. The machine consists of a robust steel construction which is located in starting position in a pit in front of the flat-bed cremator in the coffin insertion zone. The supporting beams of the coffin insertion machine are in flush with the floor.

The insertion machine developed by H · R · Heinicke complies with the intended targets in every respect.

Flue Gas Cleaning


Flue gases caused by the cremation are chilled by flowing through the flue gas heat exchanger. There is one chiller for each cremation line. Via the subsequent cyclone filter which works by using the force of gravity larger dust particles and sparks within the flue gases are carried out. The flue gas itself leaves the cyclone and is led to the filter (e.g. flat bag filter) . The flue gases are cleaned there by using additives which are available in the reactor of the filter plant and the subordinate filter elements. The quality of the cleaned flue gas (cleaned gas) is measured by the ejection instrumentation (CO, O2 and dust) realized in the filter plant and flue gas fan and recorded by the ejection evaluating arithmetician device. Coming from the induced draught fan the cleaned gases are discharged to atmosphere through the chimney installation.

The flue gas heat exchanger is cleaned automatically by using a soot-blower. The filter bags of the filter plant are cleaned automatically depending on differential pressure. The cleaning works by using compressed air - dry and oil-free.

Crematory Bochum

Range of services:
Renewal and modernization of two cremation ovens. On basis of the continuously further developed Heinicke flat bed type oven the capacity of the plant has increased by reduction of cremation time from average 80 minutes down to 60 minutes. Optimization of environmental behaviour by reduction of consumption of natural gas from 40 m3 to less than 15 m3.

Range of services:
Planning, delivery and reconstruction of entire cremation equipment for the Thai Royal Dynasty. Supervision of construction and commissioning.

Range of services:

For the first time in this project an ash mill was introduced which was designed by H.R. Heinicke and constrcuted together with a mechanical engineering company. In future this type of ash mill will be a a standard equipment part of Crematories designed by H.R. Heinicke GmbH.

The ash mill is used for feeding the urns and is equipped with metal separator, complete control and dust absorbance.

Crematory Bochum - main cemetery field

Range of services:
Supply and installation of two separate lines with gas fired furnaces, two flue gas ducts with fireproof lining, two flue gas heat exchanger (gas/water), two advanced separators in front of two flat bag filter plants with induced draught fans, a coffin insertion device for both facilities, a complete supply of compressed air, a complete automatic pressure control for the water system.

A heat recovery system, the heat is fed into the existing heat system. Re-cooling equipment for the removal of the not used amount of heat within a receptacle for the spray unit including the water treatment. The entire electric control and measurement occurs via Direct Digital Control (DDC). Insulation of the entire system.

Improvement of the incineration plant fit in 1991, consisting of:
Conversion of the filter plant with deposit of dioxins and furans, fitting a flue gas emergency avoidance, replacement of the open re-cooling- system further using a closed system (water/air), automatic control with visualization.

Completion: 2000


Crematory Munich - east cemetery

Range of services:
First step: modernization of 5 incineration plants, new fireproof lining inside the oven, fitting of a post-combustion chamber, removal of the gas supplementary heating.

Finished: 1996

Second building section: realizing the flue gas cleaning plant in compliance with the 27th BimSchV , including deposit of dioxins, furans and mercury, utilization of heat emission , combustion air preheating, visualization at the operators desk , fully-automatic supply of additive, emission control, computer for measured values.

Crematory Hanover-Lahe

Range of services:
First building section: realization of two incineration plants with gas fired furnace, flue gas ducts, two coffin insertion machines, construction of steel platforms and stairs.

Crematory Hamburg-Oejendorf, Cemetery Oejendorf

Range of services:
First building section: reconstruction of four incineration facilities ( flat-bed-oven, (completed 89/90), then realizing a gas fired furnace. Second building section : reconstruction of the flue gas cleaning in 1993, supply and installation of 4 flat bag filters with advanced separators and induced draught fans, adaptations for the 4 flue gas ducts, 4 flue gas heat exchanger ( gas/water), a heat recovery system used for heating and cooling purposes.


Time for realization of the 2nd building section including excavation and construction: 1 year


Crematory Kiel

Range of services:
First building section ( completed 1991): supply and installation of fireproof linings for each of the four existing oven as well as a post-combustion chamber for each oven, four new gas supplementary burner, 4 electric controls with flue gas analysis engineering.

Second building section ( building construction began in January 1994): supply and installation of 4 flat bag filters with advanced separators and induced draught fans. Adaptation of the flue gas ducts, of 4 flue gas heat exchanger (gas/water).
